The first decision in any CCTV project isn't the camera model — it's the system type: IP or HD (analog). Both record video, but they differ in image quality, cabling, smart features and future upgrades. Here's the comparison our engineers walk customers through every day.
What's the difference?
- HD (analog) cameras send video over coaxial cable to a DVR. Mature, simple technology at a lower entry cost.
- IP cameras send digital video over network cable to an NVR. Higher resolutions, smart AI features and a single cable for power and data (PoE).
Image quality
HD analog tops out in practice around 5MP with softer detail. IP cameras go from 2MP to 8MP (4K) with sharper digital images — and technologies like ColorVu full-colour night vision are IP-first. If you ever need to zoom into a recording and read a face or plate, IP wins.
Cabling and installation
Analog needs coax for video plus separate power wiring. IP with PoE needs just one network cable per camera — power and video together — which means cleaner installations and easier expansion. In new villas and shops, PoE cabling is the modern standard.
Smart features
This is the biggest gap. Modern Hikvision IP cameras include AcuSense human/vehicle detection, active deterrence (strobe + siren), built-in microphones and line-crossing analytics. Analog systems mostly record everything and alert on any motion — including cats, shadows and tree branches.
Cost
Analog is cheaper upfront for basic setups. But IP prices have dropped sharply — an entry IP system now costs close to analog while delivering better images and smart alerts. Factor in fewer false alarms and easier expansion, and IP usually wins on total value.
Our recommendation
- New installation (home, villa, shop, office): go IP. Better images, smart features, single-cable PoE. Browse Hikvision IP cameras.
- Existing analog system with coax already in the walls: upgrading the DVR and cameras to newer HD models can be economical — or migrate to IP gradually.
- Large properties: IP only — analytics, remote zoom lenses and 4K make the difference. See outdoor cameras and NVR recorders.
Bottom line
For almost every new project in Egypt in 2026, IP is the right choice — the price gap has closed and the capability gap has widened. Still unsure?
