The DS-7104NI-Q1/4P/M is the smallest complete recorder in the Q series: four IP channels, four PoE ports on the back, one drive bay, in a compact housing. Every part of that model code is a decision someone made to keep the box small and the price down, and each one has a consequence worth knowing before it goes on a quotation.
Read it left to right. 7104 is four channels. Q1 is a single drive bay. /4P is four built-in PoE ports, so the cameras plug straight into the recorder and take their power from it. /M is the compact housing variant. What the code does not contain is an X — this is the NI line, not NXI, and that is the most important thing on this page.
Where it earns its place on a site
It suits the job it was built for: a flat, a small shop, a clinic reception, a villa gate — four cameras, one run of cable, no separate PoE switch, no rack. The four PoE ports remove an entire component from the bill of materials and a whole class of installation error with it. For a four-camera domestic or small retail system it is the sensible box, and paying for more recorder would be paying for capacity nobody will use.
It suits a job badly the moment anyone expects it to think. NI is Hikvision's standard line; NXI is AcuSense. AcuSense is what classifies a moving object as a person or a vehicle and holds its peace when it is a cat, a shadow or a branch. This recorder does not do that. On a site where the client has been sold “smart alerts” — or where someone is meant to act on notifications overnight — the false alarms will arrive, the notifications will be muted within a fortnight, and the system will quietly stop being used. If the brief contains the word “AI”, this is the wrong model, and the DS-7604NXI-K1/4P is the four-channel PoE recorder that does classify.
The single bay is the second limit. Four channels on one disk is a fair balance for a short retention window; it is not a month of history at high resolution. Ask how far back the client needs to go before you choose the box, not after.
Before you order — three things to confirm
- Whether the client expects person and vehicle alerts. This is the NI line and does not classify. Establish that in the conversation, not in the handover.
- The PoE budget against the actual cameras. Four ports is a port count, not a wattage. Varifocal, heated or illuminator-heavy cameras draw more than a plain fixed dome. Confirm the recorder's total PoE budget and each camera's draw from the datasheets before you commit to powering all four from the box.
- Retention, in days, in writing. One bay decides this. Agree the number and the stream settings together, then size the disk to them.

Compatibility

Common questions on this model
Does it do person and vehicle detection?
No. That is AcuSense, and AcuSense is the NXI line. This is NI. If the client wants classified alerts, move to an NXI recorder before the quote goes out rather than after the complaints start.
Can I power all four cameras from the recorder?
Usually, for ordinary fixed cameras. Not automatically, for cameras with motorised lenses or strong illuminators. It is a wattage question, not a port-count question — send the camera models to 16454 and we will check the budget against the datasheet.
