Where it sits on the ladder: above the DS-2CD1023G0E-I by a small difference (what the difference buys: the microphone + the hybrid light + the intelligence) — and it is the best small step up you can pay for on this ladder. Below the DS-2CD1043G2-LIU (the same package at 4 MP). The rule: the main entrance takes the 4 MP, the other points take this camera. Where it actually gets used

An apartment door or a building entrance: you hear and see who went past, and the alert is for people only. A shop: sound and picture over the till and the door. A garden or a villa walkway: the white light when somebody comes close = a colour recording, and a visitor who knows he has been seen.

Is this ColorVu? No — and this is a point we would rather be straight about: this is Smart Hybrid Light (colour on an event, when the white light comes on), whereas ColorVu films in colour all night long. We carry ColorVu in the G3 generation (such as the DS-2CD1347G3H-LIU/SL).

Does the white light stay on all night? No — the default state is infrared. The light comes on only when a person or a vehicle is detected, and then goes off again.

Why not the 4 MP? If the distance to the subject is under 5–6 metres, 2 MP identifies well. Further than that — the 1043G2-LIU.
