The DS-2CD1083G2-LIU is the top of the bullet ladder: 8 MP — 4K Ultra HD, four times the detail of Full HD. Zoom into the recording and you can read a small detail — a face at a distance, something in somebody's hand, a number on a carton. And it comes with the full package: a built-in microphone, person and vehicle classification, and Smart Hybrid Light (infrared + a white light that gives you colour on an event).

Straight talk before the money: it costs more than the DS-2CD1063G2-LIU (6 MP) — and the difference only shows when you zoom hard into the recording; on a phone screen with no zoom you will not tell them apart. And there is a hidden cost you need to know about: 4K eats roughly twice the space of 4 MP — the same hard disk will record half as long. With four 4K cameras recording continuously you have to work the storage out properly, or record on motion only. We do not sell anybody 4K without telling them this. Which NVR records 4K? All of our AcuSense recorders record 4K — from the DS-7604NXI-K1/4P for small systems upwards. Just keep an eye on the storage arithmetic.

How much hard disk do I need? For four 4K cameras recording continuously, a 6TB disk gets you to around two weeks. Want a month? A bigger disk, or recording on motion.

Is the difference from 6 MP noticeable? On a phone screen — no. When you zoom onto a detail in a recording — yes, and strongly. If you are not going to zoom much, the 6 MP saves you the difference.
