The DS-2CD1163G2-LIU is a 6 MP dome camera with the full smart package: a built-in microphone, person and vehicle recognition, and Smart Hybrid Light (infrared, plus white light in colour when something happens). 6 MP in a dome means one camera can cover a wide hall or a large reception — and the detail stays readable when you zoom into any corner of the frame.
Where it sits on the ladder: it costs more than the DS-2CD1143G2-LIU (4 MP) — you pay that difference for wide spaces, or when a single camera has to cover more than one point of interest. It sits below the DS-2CD1183G2-LIU (8 MP, 4K) — and our advice is the same on every rung of this ladder: 4K is only worth it if you are going to zoom hard into the recordings, otherwise 6 MP is the sweet spot. Frequently asked
When does 6 MP become a necessity rather than a luxury? When the space you are covering is wider than about 8 metres, or when the point of interest (a door, a till) is far from where the camera is mounted — the extra detail is what makes the recording useful.
Does it eat more hard-disk space? Yes — about a third more than 4 MP. H.265+ reduces it, and motion-based recording reduces it further.
Why not the 8 MP? A price difference plus roughly double the storage — worth it only for heavy zooming. For most homes and shops, this is enough.
